Dear all. An update to the previously circulated email about the public
lecture on futures for news in Scotland. Due to disruption caused by the
flights crisis, the lecture has been rescheduled for Thursday 3 June. Venue
and other details below unchanged.
Mapping Futures For News
News matters. How journalism is resourced, practiced, and used are questions
of fundamental importance in political, cultural and economic life. But the
news industries in Scotland are in a volatile state. Newspaper circulations
are falling in an overcrowded market. The funding of public service
broadcast news faces an uncertain future. And the take-up of new digital and
online services in Scotland is among the lowest in the UK. What are the
possible futures for news in Scotland?
The Institute for Advanced Studies
(http://www.instituteforadvancedstudies.org.uk) is sponsoring a public
lecture and accompanying seminar series to explore this question at
Strathclyde University in Glasgow on 3-4 June 2010. The programme is
organised by Prof Brian McNair (Strathclyde University), Prof Raymond Boyle
(Glasgow University), Dr Graham Meikle and Ms Marina Dekavalla (both
Stirling University).

* Blair Jenkins is one of Scotland's most distinguished broadcasters and
media commentators. He has been head of news and current affairs at both BBC
Scotland and STV, and chaired the Scottish Broadcasting Commission set up by
parliament in 2007. From 1998 to 2003 he was Chairman of BAFTA Scotland and
he has been a member of the Royal Television Society's steering group on
current affairs. In this opening lecture for the programme on Mapping
Futures For News he will argue the case for a digital network to be
established in Scotland, both as an essential addition to the public service
media, and as a catalyst for a healthier media and democratic culture.
