Dear Museums Computer Group,
I've not posted for a good while now, so I hope my approach isn't too
direct!
I am currently looking to scope estimate costs for the development of a
number of digital interactives to be deployed within a new industrial
heritage discovery centre. I am working alongside exhibition designers,
KSLD in Edinburgh in order to deliver this project.
We are currently at the stage of getting together some preliminary costs
for digital interpretation prior to an HLF Stage C review meeting.
In order to enhance the current heritage offer we are looking to develop a
refreshed approach to interpretation. We wish to develop a scheme that
offers flexible (and changeable) content within a series of modular
displays that offer the opportunity to be reconfigured as and when
temporary exhibitions occur. In addition (and as confirmed through
community consultation), printed text should not be considered as a primary
means for interpretation, leading us to the conclusion that we should be
considering delivering interpretation through a series of digital and
manual interactives alongside object displays.
Whilst we have learnt that the majority of our potential audiences find
digital interpretation to be appealing, we have also learnt there is a
strong interest in downloadable content and the opportunity to generate
personalised content / responses where possible, particularly amongst
audiences aged 16-24.
We now at the stage of developing the Interpretation Plan for the new
discovery centre. We have identified 6 key topics that we wish to explore,
under which a number of stories will be delivered to target audiences.
With the above in mind, we are looking for a software development
specialist / ICT specialist who can provide the following:
*Software *
- The acquisition and development of a web app that is capable of
deploying HTML5 content able to be deployed on fixed touch screens within
the gallery and downloadable to visitor's devices.
- For the app to be be able to deliver content compliant with Web
Accessibility Standards including W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
2.0 (WCAG 2.0) and BS 8878.
- For it to be have had demonstrable success being deployed within
museum and gallery contexts.
- For it to have the ability to be remotely accessed by curators /
editors in order to change content with the same ease-of-use as a blogging
tool.
- For it to have the ability to retrieve collections information /
content from Adlib Internet Server in the future.
*Content Scope*
- 6 key "top level" topics, with approx 6 pages available per topic to
tell single or multiple stories.
- For each topic to offer an interactive experience for visitors i.e.
the option for people to submit responses to displays or questions posed to
them.
- For 5 "topic level" topics to have one simple interactive game each,
with the remaining 1 topic having an interactive map.
*Hardware*
- Purchasing and installation of 6 x (20"+) touchscreen interactives
able to be mounted freestanding or within modular display system.
- A 3 year minimum software and hardware support contract.
- The purchasing of all licenses as required.
- Transport and installation costs.
*Project Management*
- Working alongside our exhibition designers and curators to evolve
creative direction, design concept, wire-framing and storyboarding.
As mentioned before, at this stage we would be looking at estimates cost
for the elements outlined above. Time is fairly tight, so any estimates you
could provide at this time would be highly appreciated, ideally by next
Thursday 6th of May.
Please get in touch with me directly if you have further questions. Looking
forward to hearing from you and exploring opportunities!
Yours sincerely,
Robin Patel
