Chair in Islamic Studies

The Department of Theology and Religious Studies currently consists of four
Professors, a Reader, five Senior Lecturers, six lecturers and a teaching
fellow. It offers degrees in Christian Theology, Religious Studies, and in
Islamic Studies as well as a range of Masters programmes, an external
Certificate and Diploma programme, and a strong and growing international
research school.  Altogether some 250 students are registered with the
Department.  Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies also form part
of a wider administrative grouping with Classics, Philosophy and
Anthropology. 
 
The Centre for Islamic Studies has primary responsibility for the Single
and Joint Honours degrees in Islamic Studies, for the external Certificate
and Diploma programme in Islamic Studies and Arabic and for research in
Islamic Studies at both M.Phil. and Ph.D. level.  Staff teach Islamic
options in Religious Studies and contribute to other modules in the
Department such as Interfaith Dialogue, Religion and the Environment and
Religion Society and Politics. They also participate in the MA programmes
on Religious Experience, Death and Immortality, and Religion Politics and
International Relations.  

Sponsorship
The Centre for Islamic Studies is well supported by endowments from the
Crown Princes of Abu Dhabi and Bahrein which currently have a market value
of  £1.5 million as well as an annual contribution of £21K from the Amir of
Qatar. In addition Sheikh Khalifa of Abu Dhabi contributed half the cost of
the magnificent new Departmental Building named in his honour, as well as
the costs of refurbishing a small Mosque for Muslim students. The Sponsors
are represented on a Joint Advisory Board for Islamic Studies which seeks
ways of further developing the subject. 

Vision Statement  
Both the Department and the Advisory Board share a common vision namely
that In Islamic Studies we wish to establish Lampeter as a centre of
excellence in which Islamic Theology, History and Culture can be studied as
comprehensively as Christianity is in UK departments of Theology.  To this
end accommodation has been provided  in the Sheikh Khalifa Building for a
Professor and six lecturers in Islamic Studies and it is hoped gradually to
build up to that staffing level from the current position of three
full-time and one part-time  staff  in Islamic Studies.  

The Professorship 
The Professor must be a well-established scholar who can provide academic
leadership in Islamic Studies and contribute significantly to the research
profile of the Centre and the Department.  The holder of this new post will
have a distinguished publication record and a proven ability to attract
post-graduate research students. The Professor will work with the members
of the Advisory Board and the Department in building up the strength of the
Islamic Studies programme.
