Ethics & Privacy in Learning Analytics – a DELICATE issue

Checklist for implementation of Learning Analytics

The LACE project conducted a series of Expert Workshops on Ethics and Privacy for Learning Analytics (#EP4LA) to get to the heart of the matter, by analysing the most common views and the propositions made by the LA community to solve them.

An eight-point checklist named DELICATE has been developed that can be applied by teachers, researchers, policy makers and institutional managers to facilitate a trusted implementation of Learning Analytics.

The DELICATE checklist 4 privacy was released at LAK16 where it also won the Best Paper Award.

Is privacy a showstopper for learning analytics?

A Review of Current Issues and their Solutions

This review paper considers the dangers that might be raised by learning analytics. It then explores the ethical perspectives on privacy and data which are relevant to these dangers. Finally it presents and discusses a number of current proposals from institutions which propose ways of addressing privacy problems in learning analytics.

Learning Analytics Interoperability: Requirements, Specifications and Adoption

Interoperability specifications and architectures for learning analytics are rapidly evolving, but the education sector is poorly prepared for understanding the implications of these developments. The current state of specifications and architectures is surveyed, with a particular focus on xAPI, IMS Caliper, PAR, Apereo and Jisc. The readiness of user groups to engage with the development process is discussed, and found to be weak. Finally the report proposes some ways of approaching the formulation of strategic choices on interoperability strategy that institutions are facing.

Meet us at the 2016 EDEN Conference

June 14-17, Budapest Hungary

LACE partners organise a workshop to explore how to put in place a system that supports learning while still respecting privacy. Participation in the workshop will give a first-hand update on international research and practice in learning analytics, with pointers to where to find more information and how to connect to the rapidly expanding European community of interest in this field.
