Building the Learning Analytics Community

Short update on the LACE project's progress.

LACE is proving to be a real community exchange. During the last few months, LACE partners have run or participated in more than 10 learning analytics events targeted at both academics and practitioners. In addition, we have run webinars, written blog posts and articles and started work on a series of White Papers, as well as beginning to build connections with our Associate Partners across Europe.

Ethical & Privacy Issues

Together with the SURF Special Interest Group for Learning Analytics LACE will organise a first workshop on Ethical & Privacy Issues in the Application of Learning Analytics. The workshop will take place on October 28, 2014 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

We ask for short descriptions of the issues you face in your initiatives. Together with international experts we will discuss these issues and seek to provide clear guidelines. Please input your questions and comments via this form. Your examples are most welcome. We will keep them confidential and try to prepare an expert driven reply to your questions. Submission deadline is October 15, 2014.

Quality Indicators

During LAK2014 we started a Group Concept Mapping (GCM) study about quality indicators for learning analytics.

GCM offers a very structured approach to create a visual geography of ideas from a group of stakeholders. As an outcome 8 clusters of LA quality indicators were defined. From these clusters and the rating data we constructed a first version of a framework of quality indicators for learning analytics consisting of five criteria with four quality indicators each. The five criteria are Objectives, Learning Support, Learning Measures and Output, Data Aspects and Organisational Aspects.

We will keep you updated and let you know as soon as the full study results are available!

Learning Analytics SoLAR Flare Event

Under the auspices of SoLAR, the LACE project will organize on 24 October at the OUUK in Milton Keynes a networking gathering for professionals interested in research and the use of learning analytics.

The Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR) Flares provide opportunities to learn what’s going on in learning analytics research and practice, to share resources and experience, and to forge valuable new connections within the education sector and beyond.

Workplace learning needs a new learning process

For the World Manufacturing Forum 2014 (Milan, July 2014) a post conference workshop was organised by LACE together with Gala and Manuskills EU projects.

The workshop was dedicated to Innovating Manufacturing Education & Training and it was the perfect match for the general WMF event, a high end executive gathering of world leading industry stakeholders, governors and academics to discuss the future of industrial policies and investments at the dawn of what many call, the 4th industrial revolution.

Practitioners and data wranglers at LASI-NL

LACE was involved in the organisation of the LASI-NL, the Dutch Learning Analytics Summer Institute on June 30 and July 1, 2014, in Zeist, The Netherlands.

The summer institute was split into a „practitioner day“ that looked at barriers to adoption, stakeholder requirements, instructional design and methods, and a „data wrangler day“ that focused on the pragmatic issues for practitioners in the filed such as insight over tooling, the standards needed to build infrastructure within a university, getting data out of LMSs and data privacy.

Seeking new Associate Partners

For LACE to work effectively, it needs to bring people together from across Europe, not just those areas represented by members of the consortium. For this reason, we are encouraging individuals and organisations to join us as Associate Partners.

Associate Partners work with us in various ways, from joining the discussion and writing blog posts to contributing evidence about learning analytics or collaborating on a White Paper. Upon registering Associate Partners will be contacted by the LACE representative of the indicated sector of interest, who will provide further details about possible collaborations.
