Doubt any of you would be surprised that I abhor
smoking, whether of nicotine based products or
anything else including cannabis.
Furthermore while there may be a few people for
whom drugs derived from the many substances in
cannabis plants are useful, there are many more who are harmed by its use.
However William Hague is right, the battle to
prohibit cannabis use is lost - and a law that
can't be enforced, that most police forces have
given up trying to enforce, undermines all laws.
Further, while cannabis may cause harm to users
that is not in itself a basis for making its use illegal.
SO - why post on this?
Because:
a) Leglizing cannabis is right;
b) Legalizing and taxing cannabis is one way to
close some part of the £20Bn gap that government promises has created.
After seeing something of the consequences of
this is the US this spring, it's clear that bans
on advertising, public use, publicization of use
should all be introduced / considered
simultaneously. I'd also favour laws making it
explicit that employers can require testing
routinely, randomly or upon suspicion whenever
use of cannabis could impair work performance,
with maintenance of laws regarding driving while impaired.
Would such a move carry public support?
Is linking cannabis taxation to the NHS too cynical / bad precedent?
Thought I might test it on the list!
