Background Information

Forest Enterprise (FE) Scotland is an agency of Forestry Commission Scotland and its main task is to manage the National Forest Estate in Scotland. 

This post is part of the national Planning & Environment support team. The team provides strategic direction, support and guidance to the ten Forest Districts in Scotland in delivering agreed corporate targets, maintaining UKWAS certification and contributing to smooth and efficient running of FES business. The work of the team aims to help ensure FES effectively and efficiently manages the National Forest Estate to meet ministerial objectives as expressed in the National Strategic Directions. 

The FESHO Planning & Environment team consists of 18 members spread across Scotland but primarily located in Inverness, Edinburgh or Dumfries. Staff in the team cover a wide range of expertise including an archaeologist, ecologists, landscape architects, surveys & soils co-ordinator, tree health & bio-security co-ordinator and a planning & GIS support team. 

The post holder will report to the GIS Support Team Manager and work with the GIS Support team that delivers FD and FESHO staff support in relation to GIS use, data management and analysis. This role also provides key GIS and analysis support to the Estates Development team.  

The members of the Planning and Environment team work collaboratively to achieve organisational objectives. The post holder will be expected to work in partnership with the wider Planning and Environment team, and with other teams across FES.


The key responsibilities for the role will include:

The post holder will work within the GIS support team to help cover the GIS support desk. 

The post holder will provide proactive and reactive technical GIS assistance, and give general guidance or advise to both district and national users of forester desktop and forester web GIS. 

This role will provide a data interrogation and analysis service in support of national projects or queries. This includes performing ad-hoc spatial analysis and report outputs to support the estate development team. 

You’ll provide support to national data model or system development working groups. Along with general support you’ll also be Renewables system data owner and take responsibility for maintaining the data, liaising on required software fixes with software Developers while working closely with the system owner for any developments and approval.

Act as the communications lead for the GIS support team and as the ‘gatekeeper’ for all communications with users. This includes maintaining and implementing the support team’s communication plan. A further key task will be to lead on the development and maintenance of FES’s new WordPress based web site for all GIS support information. 

Support others in the team to deliver GIS training to FES staff e.g. 1 day Introduction to Forester Web GIS course or short workshops for staff explaining recent changes to Forester Web GIS.
