Dear Colleagues,
In May this year, the UK Earth Science Staff Development project ran a
workshop entitled "Back to Basics: ideas for teaching basic maths and
science skills essential to the Earth Sciences". This workshop sparked off
much debate as to the level of such skills that students arrive at
university with, methods for testing this level and techniques for
effectively teaching such skills in the Earth Sciences context given the
range of student abilities.
A number of techniques were presented and the participants expressed an
interest in expanding the collection of such resources and continuing the
discussion in a virtual context. Notes on the meeting can be found at
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/herdu/mres/basics/ and the more detailed minutes
(including a description of the resources presented) will shortly be
available on our project website .
If anyone is interested in contributing to the discussion with ideas,
experiences, tips or techniques or would be interested in contributing to a
web-based resource collection then please do so via these discussion lists
or email me personally.
A second workshop on the same theme is to be held at the University of
Durham on Friday 17th September as part of the Earth Science Teachers'
Association (http://www.soton.ac.uk/~ukgec/ESTA/) annual conference and it
is hoped that some of this discussion can be utilised to inform the nature
of the event.
Best wishes,
Helen King
