Hello,
I have three questions - I hope you can help with some of them!
1) Can anyone help me find sources and resources about life in 17th-century Scotland? I'm trying to build a handling box of objects that would relate to school life and childhood in particular, but am also interested in clothing, food and any related paintings of the period, as well as general information about how life was lived. I've been finding lots about the Tudor period and some about the Stuarts, but it's hard to find things about everyday life for ordinary Scottish folk after the mid-1640s until things start to focus on the Jacobites (and then it's *all* Jacobites!).
2) Can anyone recommend good replica-suppliers for handling objects for the kind of thing that would go in this box? (This may include replicas of items that are going in our new museum exhibition, which is more broadly local social history.)
3) I'm also thinking about developing loanable activity rucksacks for children. Has anyone done anything like this before, and if so, do you have any tips or recommendations?
To give some background: I'm with East Lothian Council's Museum Service, and the above are for the new John Gray Centre (a museum, archive, local history centre and library), which is due to open this spring. The Centre isn't about John Gray (a philanthropist and minister who was deposed when he refused to swear loyalty to William and Mary), but he lived through an interesting time in history, and people are asking lots of questions about him, so we are using him as an anchor for some of our themes.
Thanks very much for any help!

Subject: Temporary Position on offer at Kew Bridge Steam Museum
Dear Colleagues,
I have been asked to put this out to my colleagues in the museum education field. We think this would suit people looking to build on their experience or a freelancer looking for a few months steady work in the immediate future.
Kew Bridge Steam Museum has the following post on offer, please send expressions of interest via CV and covering letter to Mr Stuart Clark, Operations Manager, [log in to unmask] or via post to Kew Bridge Steam Museum, Green Dragon Lane, Brentford, Middlesex, TW8 0EN.
Part-time Education Officer, 22 .5 hours per week.
Based on the annual salary of £11,255.90 per annum ( temporary contract for initial 4 months with potential for some extension by agreement).
Please find attached a job description for the post, along with information on the museum itself.
This post is being offered on a temporary basis within the scope of a current HLF bid, which if successful will enable Kew Bridge Steam Museum to invest heavily in its' learning and interpretation provision over a period of 3 years. The museum has won its' Phase 1 funding and is currently awaiting the results of its' Phase 2 bid. This temporary post would enable the museum to maintain the current educational offer, mainly delivering and marketing the formal education service and develop current informal learning projects as agreed. It will suit someone with some experience so that the post holder is able to take on an active service immediately.
Yours Sincerely,
Jo Willis
Education Officer

Being an Effective Trustee or Board Member
On 28 February Effective Governance: Strategic Teamwork for Trustee Boards
and Committees(http://bit.ly/wNnx7V) is coming to Creating Capacity. Lynne

in the culture and heritage sectors, she is the perfect person to get
Trustees and Board Members to think and work effectively with the
organisation's they support.
Who is it for?
This course has been tailored for the needs of Board /Management Committee
members and Trustees, Steering Committee members and those staff who service
and support their board and/or committees.
What will I learn?
Participants in the session will explore:
* How to identify and maintain a board/committee’s strategic focus
* Board/Committee group dynamics – roles, knowledge, different styles,
skills and personalities
* Alternative models of holding meetings, debating and group decision making
* Your own leadership style and how it works with others
The benefits?
In joining the course Board and senior management team members will gain
from a session which provides practical guidance; inspiration and invaluable
case studies. It will mean your governance structure allows your
organisation to face the age of austerity with purpose and a clear strategic
direction.
What do I do next?
All Creating Capacity courses include a full day’s training, all course
materials, lunch and three months post course support from your expert
trainer. There are a limited number of Renaissance London funded(
<http://bit.ly/wtq350> http://bit.ly/wtq350) places left for this course -

available at £155 plus VAT. Don’t forget you can book and pay for your
course online( <http://bit.ly/xPzrLb> http://bit.ly/xPzrLb) or if you’d
