THE ‘LAMPEDUSA DILEMMA’: GLOBAL FLOWS AND CLOSED BORDERS - WHAT SHOULD EUROPE DO?

We are pleased to invite you to the conference “The ‘Lampedusa Dilemma’: Global Flows And Closed Borders, What Should Europe Do?”. Organized by Anna Triandafyllidou, Director of the GGP Research Strand on Cultural Pluralism at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, the conference will take place on Monday 17 from 9:00 to 18:00 and Tuesday 18 November from 9:00 to 17:00 at Villa La Fonte (Via delle Fontanelle 18, San Domenico di Fiesole).
Academics from prestigious universities (including but not limited to: Oxford University, EHESS, University of Heidelberg, Columbia University) and members from international organisations (OSCE, UNHCR, ILO, World Bank) will join experts from national governments and cultural institutions to discuss what can be called the “Lampedusa dilemma”: the trade-off between protected EU borders and the dynamism of global flows of migrants and asylum seekers.
The panels of the conference will focus on the challenges that migration presents for policy makers, for politics, for our labour markets and not least for our ethics, as follows:
Monday, November 17th
• International Migration across the Mediterranean: Lessons from the Past
• Migration and the Demographic Dilemma for Europe
• European Labour Markets and the Potential of Irregular Migration
• Governing Irregular Migration: New Challenges and New Actors
Tuesday, November 18th
• Fortress Europe and the Responsibility to Protect
• The Moral Duties of States to Admit Refugees and Immigrants
This event is the inaugural of the EUI Forum on Migration Citizenship and Demography, which is a 2-year programme (2014-2016) that brings together professors, senior fellows, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students from the four EUI departments, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Max Weber Programme, over a set of themes of common expertise and interest. Building on a wealth of academic publications, policy papers, conferences and workshops, produced by EUI scholars in the wider field of citizenship and democracy, demography and migration management, cultural diversity and ways to address it, the Forum offers critical analysis, informed debate and policy recommendations.
