The Summer School has been designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the immigration and asylum policy of the EU from a legal perspective. The programme is organised by the Odysseus Academic Network under the umbrella of theInstitute for European Studies of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Participants in the Summer School typically include PhD and graduate students, researchers, EU and Member State officials, representatives of NGOs and International Organisations, lawyers, judges, social workers and more.
In addition to the classes, evening debates and visits to the European Institutions, the course provides an excellent opportunity to spend an intellectually stimulating fortnight and to network among a group of around one hundred fellow participants specialised in the area of asylum and immigration coming from all over Europe. The setting of the summer school in Brussels, capital of the European Union, creates a unique environment that facilitates participants' deeper engagement with the EU institutions.
In more a PhD Seminar offers up to 10 doctoral researchers the opportunity to present their PhD project and receive feedback from a panel of Odysseus Network's Members from various European universities and possibly one high-level practitioner attending the Summer School. The PhD Seminar is aimed at researchers in law, but applications from researchers in political science or international relations dealing with legal aspects are welcome. The sessions are in English, but may be organised in French upon request.
Four grants are available for PhD students and will be attributed on the basis of academic record and financial need.
Scholarships for Refugees
In the context of the current crisis, we want to invite 10 students recently recognised as refugees in the EU to participate to the Summer School.
We want to give to refugee students the possibility to pursue their education and gain knowledge in EU immigration and asylum law and policy as well as to discover the capital of Europe and the European institutions.
Due to a crowdfunding campaign, we hope to be able to fund the full participation of around ten participants who hold refugee or subsidiary protection status in Europe. The funds cover registration fees and transportation costs, accommodation and living expenses for the entire duration of the Summer School.
