I appreciate all your recommendations. I'll get them as soon as possible. Dear Omar, I went to the chapter in the book you mentioned, and I found it very interesting. It is a difficult question how to draw the line between surpassing disasters and non-surpassing ones, but Toufic's argument seems that it is not (and should not) be an easy task to do. This is a very interesting position to take in contemplating how we experience and understand a terrifying event. I'll try to watch what is being withdrawn from us in the face of events that possibly will turn out a surpassing disaster.
Thank you everyone for your kindness. Kohei

Mary Anne Doane "Information, Crisis and Catastrophy" may be of help for
you. It was published in "Logics of Television" by Patricia Mellencamp
in 1990. It offers some philosophical thoughts on the representation of
catastrophy (and has been included in a German collection of essays on
Television and Philosophy in the 2000s).

I am wondering if anyone has in mind any books, articles, films, photographs, literary works, and any other kinds of representation, fictional or nonfictional, on natural disasters. My current interest is hovering over the ethical, aesthetic problem of representing natural disasters in the media (like Sontag does on war photography), but not limited to it.
