Dear Martin,
Thanks very much for this. I've had lots of interesing responses from all over, along with one or two from people (who seem to have the idea that what I'm looking for is practical help, because I don't know
what citation is about) who've sent links to vague web sites about avoiding plagiaris or study skills.
Once I've collated all the responses I receive over a two week period Ill send you the result.
Thanks again.
Best wishes,
Gavin

I'm enjoying this exchange, and I think it provides some good points we can
pass on to students. Here are my two cents:
The purpose of academic citation is to make it clear to the reader where a
writer's original contributions begin and end, and where he or she has
incorporated the ideas of others.
The purpose of academic citation is not simply to defend against accusations
of plagiarism and avoid getting into trouble.
Simple and direct, I know, but these are the explanations that work in the
context of where I am, which is in the writing centre at the University of
Calgary-Qatar, an undergraduate nursing university with an entirely EFL
population, 95% female. The students here have all heard of plagiarism, but
citation techniques and their importance are relatively new concepts.
