Hi colleagues,
I am working with young people with disabilities in Korea. We are running a program which gives an opportunity for young people with and without disabilities to undertake a study program to see disabled people (persons with disabilities)'s rights and other relevant issues in different countries.Selected youth choose the countries and thems each year.
As the Anti-discrimination Act for disabled people has come into force this month for the first time in Korea, (2nd country following Hong Kong), 2 teams of 6 teams in the program plan to look at ways to best implement the Act in Korea. 1 team decided to look at Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which has been an example of an anti-discrimination act for many countries. The team basically want to see what the ADA has brought to persons with disabilities in the States, and how the practice in the main 4 ares has been monitored.
The team is going to visit Washington and New York, and has already chosen some governmental agencies to vist in employment, public service, facilties run by private sectors and tlephone service for people with hearing impairment and speech difficulty.
However, they found it difficult to find individuals who can tell them direct experience of them selves, and important projects run by NGOs in the above 4 areas and education. I wonder if anybody can recommend places to visit and people to meet both in Washington and New York.
Best regards,
