31 October - 1 November 2018 - Whats Going On? A Discourse on Fashion,
Design & Sustainability


Centre for Sustainable Fashion is proud to announce it will be hosting
the 6th edition of the Global Fashion Conference, taking place at
University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion on the 31st
October and 1st November 2018, with the aim of stimulating the
international debate around fashion, design and sustainability through
the lens of design thinking and practice, and coinciding with the
celebration of CSFs 10th anniversary.

We humans have always fashioned protection and adornment for our bodies
from the world around us. Beyond this, the activities and artefacts of
fashion act as a barometer of our lives and lifestyles. Today the
activity of shielding and embellishing the body is a personal process as
well as a global industry with powerful ramifications for the ecological
and social world in which we live.

In this conference, the first to exclusively examine this area, we
invite you to explore the dynamics, challenges and propositions of
fashion and sustainability through the lens of design thinking and
practice. That is, we ask you to examine Whats Going On? in this
emerging field of study. The conference theme should be understood in
the broadest of terms, encouraging a diverse range of submissions
addressing design and sustainability research in the context of fashion
and its systems from a variety of philosophical angles and
methodological approaches. Submissions should align with at least one of
the conference themes of Power, Nature, Culture or Society.

With a multi-disciplinary approach the two-day conference will be the
leading international discussion forum for academics, entrepreneurs,
designers, professionals and business representatives on the topics of

The Organising Committee invites you to participate by sharing your
research and/or innovative projects. All submissions must be original,
unpublished work. They can include long and short papers, interactive
sessions, special sessions, photography, film, performance and other
modes of investigation and representation that can be accommodated
within the space and time of the conference.

All proposals will be submitted to blind peer review and different forms
of publication will be given to the ones accepted.

In Conjunction with AVI 2018, International Working Conference on
Advanced Visual Interfaces



GHItaly18 aims at bringing together scholars and industry practitioners
to establish a common ground on the topic. The main goal of the event is
to spur discussion, exchange of ideas, and development of new ways of
researching, teaching, and working on games-human interaction. The
perspective that the workshop aims at investigating is the design of
visual interfaces applied in the specific field of the production of
video games. The application range of video games has to be intended in
its broadest sense: both entertainment and applied finalities.

GHItaly18 extends the scope of GHItaly17 by especially focusing on the
aspects related to the design and development of visual interfaces, a
highly relevant issue for creating an engaging and satisfactory user
experience in deeply multidimensional artefacts such as video games.


The workshop aims at collecting contribution advancing the research
applied to video games. This edition will especially focus on the
influence of visual interface design on the final quality of user
experience. Suggested topics include (but are not limited to):

(6) pages in length, including references. The papers must be formatted
using the ACM SIGCHI format.

All the papers will be subject to a double review process by the members
of the Programme Committee. The proceedings with the papers accepted to

version of their work to an international journal.

diversity. The ACM SIGCHI Conference on Designing Interactive Systems
(DIS) is the premier international arena where designers and computer
scientists meet to debate and shape the future of interactive systems
design and practice. DIS is owned by the ACM Special Interest Group on
Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI).

Design thinking and approaches to problems that are long(er) term -- on
the order of 20, 50, or 100 years -- have a distinct cast. With this
workshop, we seek to enable a conversation at the intersection of
long(er) timeframes and the role of design thinking and practice.
Increasingly, researchers and designers of technology are investigating
both individual and societal problems that require a long(er)-term
design thinking approach to grapple with their complex, emergent, and
dynamic nature. Yet, embracing a long(er)-term approach to intentionally
designing the role, place, and pace of information technologies and
systems that might operate over long, indeterminate amounts of time has
received less attention in the human-computer interaction, design, and
related communities.

The goal of this workshop is to foster an interdisciplinary research
community. While focused on the design of information systems, we
recognize that long(er) term design thinking surfaces in many fields.
Sample fields include but are not limited to: architecture,
computer-supported cooperative work and learning, cultural heritage,
data curation, design research, human-computer interaction, land
restoration, libraries, museology, participatory design, and urban
planning. If you feel your field and perspective is relevant, please
consider coming!

In the workshop, we will collaborate on:

(1) Sharing. sharing approaches, case studies, methods, strategies,
tactics, and heuristics for engaging design thinking on long(er)-term
timeframes, on the order of 20, 50 or 100 years

(2) Reflecting. generating critical and constructive discussions for how
to improve current approaches and practices

(3) Envisioning. identifying new opportunities and grand challenges for
long(er)-term design thinking approaches


We invite researchers, designers, and practitioners interested in
Long(er)-Term Design Thinking from a broad range of perspectives.

As noted above, sample fields include but are not limited to:
architecture, computer-supported cooperative work and learning, cultural
heritage, data curation, design research, human-computer interaction,
land restoration, libraries, museology, participatory design, and urban
planning. If you feel your field and perspective is relevant, please
consider coming!

Sample questions and topics include but are not limited to:

How is the long-term and multi-lifespan conceptualized and attended to
in and across the design process?

In a field known for cutting edge innovation, where devices over five
years old are regarded as legacy, how can we consider processes and
solutions that extend robust and enduring human-technology relations?
What kind of design processes, methods, heuristics, strategies, tactics
could be helpful here?

How should design teams approach creating information systems that are
intended to be in existence and use well beyond the lives of intended
stakeholders (and the original members of the design team itself)?

How do we account for multiple generations of stakeholders in a
long-term or multi-lifespan design process? Relatedly, how do we account
for not-yet-born future stakeholders, who will be impacted by systems
designed over the longer-term?

What are the practical, ethical, and/or moral issues of creating systems
intended to outlive (and be maintained) beyond the lives of those that
design them?

What roles do technology play in shaping how people experience time?
And, what opportunities exist for interactive systems to enable
experience of longer, more diverse forms of time?

What kinds of methods, tactics, and approaches are used to design
technologies and systems that embody temporal expressions alternative to
normative Western concepts of time? Where have methodological or
practical struggles emerged and how have they been addressed?

In what ways can non-human actors and timeframes be scaffolded to
support long(er)-term design thinking?

What are the grand challenges to and opportunities in researching and
practicing long(er)-term and/or multi-lifespan design?


To apply, please submit a 1-2 page position paper that briefly addresses
the following questions:

1. Why do you want to come to this workshop? What conversations would
you like to have? If there are one or two key issues, challenges or
opportunities that youre especially interested in discussing during the
workshop, please let us know. Tell us why you think they are important,
to you personally and to the field more generally.

2. What do you hope to contribute to others during the workshop? What do
you see yourself contributing to the workshop (e.g. Perspectives?
Methods? Case studies? Stories? Critical reflections?) What can other
participants learn from you, your design approach/experiences, and

3. What is your background? Let us know what work (if any) you have done
in this area? How is your work related to the long(er) term design
thinking theme of this workshop?

4. What is a provocative, inspirational, or generative idea you have
about long(er) term design? For this question feel free to submit an

range of provocative ideas to seed the workshop conversation.

Addressing designed form - demarcating design.

The conferences aim is to draw the attention of design research towards
the form of designed objects by exploring the boundaries of design.

Design processes can be described (the technical, procedural aspects)
and design aims explained (Inclusive Design, Sustainable Design). This
is the stock of much design research. However, the core of design which
is the visual is seemingly neglected other than in terms of the stimulus
for a consumer response. The preferred natural science formats in design
research writing tend to underplay the qualitative. Consider the
structuring formula of background, literature review, hypothesis,
methods, data and analysis. If the difference between design and
engineering is the subjective and qualitative, is this format
appropriate? Designers plan but not all planners design  does the
managerial approach to design miss something critical? People solve
problems through processes but sometimes the solution is just a
sandwich. Is that design?

The seminar seeks to focus on the essential in design, that which makes
it distinct from other disciplines. There is considerable latitude in
this call for papers for a wide variety of views, those that emphasise
ethical concerns, procedure and inclusive approaches to creativity. Such
wide ranging views span from Herbert Simon (1996) to the work of David
Pye (1964).

The output should be essays that can inform those researching and
practicing design. They should also be useful to those learning the
discipline and who wish to have a conceptual framework for form-giving
and its meanings.

Note that the question is not "what is design" but rather how can we
address research on design that acknowledges its special aesthetic
quality, the wow/yuk factor. Buchanans (2001) definition: "Design is the
human power of conceiving, planning and making products that serve human
beings in the accomplishment of their individual and collective
purposes". Is that not leaving something out? Hillier (1998) wondered if
it was possible at all to address the intuitive in design (which must
refer in some sense to the aesthetic/subjective). Buchanan's definition
conceivably involves objects and indeed services with no obvious
aesthetic quality. Much design research seems to involve this kind of
product or else pays scant regard to the "wow" in design. Hilliers
question challenges those who might try to address the Wow. Would such
design research become a form of art history? Would that be a problem?
If it isnt a form of art history, what would it be?

Contributors will be asked to present their paper and to provide a
detailed commentary on the work of one other participant. As such the
micro-conference will be an opportunity for wide ranging and considered

We are proud to announce the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer
Interaction, NordiCHI 2018, which will take place in Oslo, Norway on
Sept 29 - Oct 3, 2018.

The biannual NordiCHI conference is the main Nordic forum for
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. NordiCHI addresses the field
in a broad sense and is a meeting place for researchers form academia
and industry, designers, practitioners, educators and others working
within HCI and related disciplines. NordiCHI is organized in
collaboration with ACM SIGCHI.

Submission deadlines:

15th of April 2018: research papers (of variable length, 4-10 pages)

2nd of May 2018: all other types of submissions: work in progress
papers, posters, demos, design cases, future scenarios, practitioners &
industry experiences, workshops, tutorials, and doctoral colloquium.

The theme of NordiCHI 2018 is revising the /life cycle/. The theme life
cycles broadly address changes within the field of HCI. We want to
provoke reflections and understandings concerning the design process
life cycles and how increasingly complex entanglements of use and design
transcend the old divisions between design and use of interactive
technologies. Furthermore, critical reflections on the sustainability of
digital artifacts challenges a narrow view on technology life cycles,
both from a philosophical and an empirical perspective. Thinking about
life cycles foregrounds issues of temporality, permanence, and
durability of HCI concepts, methods, tools, artifacts. We want to open
up for discussions about how the field changes and what we, as a
community, consider to matter most when we look to the future.

NordiCHI 2016 invites original papers that move the field of
human-computer interaction forward, be it through the advance of theory,
methodology, or practice. We invite submissions of high international
standard, presenting original work that significantly contributes to
research and practice of Human-Computer Interaction in its broadest
sense. Papers should be anonymized and formatted according to ACM SIGCHI
papers format. Submissions are made electronically through the
conference paper submission and reviewing system PCS (Precision
Conference System). Please note that the deadlines are firm and will not
be extended. The papers are peer reviewed in a double-blind review
process. Some submission categories will be reviewed by a jury of

Journal of Design Thinking. Submissions could be on different fields of
design thinking, design practice, the role between design theory and
praxis, reflective practice and conceptualization challenges. They would
be evaluated through peer review process.

Call for Papers

University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim (HAWK), Germany
New Experimental Research in Design / NERD2GO

After the great success of the first NERD conference, held in 2017 at
the Braunschweig University of Art (Germany), we, the members of BIRD,
are thrilled to announce the next edition: NERD2GO 2018.

For design and design research and, in particular, for societal
development and new perspectives of insight, it is extremely important
to intensify and publish the discourse on intelligent reflections and
findings in design research. The complex, particular and open nature of
future-oriented design research always unveils substantial aspects that
help to highlight societal, and hence, cultural, economic, ecological
and technical issues and to provide a new basis for working on these
problems. Developing new perspectives of insight is all the more
necessary given both the complex changes in societal dimensions and the
uncertainties that come with them.

After thorough discussion, BIRD has decided to stay away from limiting
the second NERD conference to a particular topic. Instead, once again,
we want to keep the field completely open. Therefore, we are looking for
smart and truly experimental work from all areas of design research. The
term experimental is here used to include both the thematic issues under
investigation as well as new forms and methods in design research.
Radical approaches, also from new areas of research, are explicitly
welcome; unsettling conventional thinking and alleged certainties is
expressly supported by this conference.

Therefore, NERD2GO is the platform for design research projects that
dare to go down hitherto untrodden paths to gather new insight. The
critical questioning and analysing of what is deemed normal, discussing
the potential existential blurriness of categories, concepts, insights,
ideas and actions: these would be useful approaches for the kind of
design research that will be presented and discussed at NERD2GO.

We are looking for speakers who have just completed their doctoral
theses on the kinds of issues described above or who are still working
on their theses, but have reached a stage where they already can and
want to present their work. We also welcome contributions by NERDs from
other fields who share a similar commitment to new experimental
approaches in design research.

The deadline for the submission of extended abstracts (1000-1500 words)
is 31st March 2018. Presentations should be about 30 minutes, followed
by discussions. We will select eight to ten speakers to be invited to
NERD2GO. It is also envisaged to publish (online and print) the
contributions as part of the BIRD series published at Birkhuser.

The conference will be held in English.

In mid-April, at the latest, we will announce who will be invited to
present their work at the conference.

20-24 August 2018 - Participatory Design Conference: Participatory
Design, Politics and Democracy

The biennial Participatory Design Conference (PDC) is an international
conference that is organised from the 20th until the 24th of August in
Hasselt and Genk (Belgium). For four days, you can visit and participate
in a variety of workshops, lectures, exhibitions, (paper) presentations
and enjoy food, drinks and informal events in locations in both cities.
These are all related to the challenge of approaching design processes
and projects (of cities, products, ICT systems, etc.) in participatory
ways, with the people who have a stake in these processes and projects
(citizens, policy makers, businesses, etc.).

The conference gathers a multidisciplinary and international group of
researchers and practitioners (outside of academia) encompassing a wide
range of issues that emerge around participatory design, encountered and
discussed in multiple fields. These include, but are not limited to,
architecture and spatial planning, design, arts, co-design, sociology,
media studies or development studies.


Call to host servdes2020

The ServDes conference committee welcomes proposals to host the Service
Design and Service Innovation conference 2020, ServDes.2020. This will
be the 7th edition of the biannual ServDes conference, following Oslo in
2009, Linkping in 2010, Helsinki in 2012, Lancaster in 2014, Copenhagen
in 2016 and Milan in 2018. ServDes is the premier research conference
for exchanging knowledge within Service Design and service innovation
studies. It is a biannual conference with the aim of bringing
researchers and practitioners together to discuss, share and evolve the
emerging discipline of Service Design, and design-related service
innovation. Proceedings from the conference are published open and
online, and their availability for readers and indexers is guaranteed by
Linkping University Electronic Press. We welcome applications from
institutions from all over the world with a proven history of research
and/or education in this field and a relatively active local environment
to help us progress with Service Design future development.


Your proposal should answer some basic questions, in order to be part of
the selection process, and be around 2000 words long:

Where: information on the hosting organisation and city (why there?) and
accessibility (can delegates easily get to the conference venue?)

Who: who is the organising committee (Is there the required capacity and
expertise? what are the ongoing and past topic-related projects,
publications or education activities?) including a documented commitment
from a local research group/team and the host institution (Is there the
required commitment and support?)

What: what is the proposed theme of the conference (How is it relevant
for the development of the field?), any idea for its possible format and
publication options beyond the proceedings, and potential social program

Why: why do you want to organize the conference (What is the interest in
