Sudbury is an Open Prison.
http://www.derbygripe.co.uk/sudbury.htm which is a local website and
contains quite a bit of background.
Sudbury is a Category D Prison which is described as containg "prisoners who
are trusted enough to wander freely but must show up for daily roll calls"
http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/justice/prison/
The regime is as follows:
"Regime: Includes full-time and part-time education and evening classes,
workshops, training course (bricklaying, painting & decorating and
industrial cleaning), farms and gardens, kitchen and a maintenance
department.
Offending behaviour groups available are Enhanced Thinking Skills and
Cognitive Skills Booster. There are also special features such as a prisoner
pre-release course, Business in Prisons, a resettlement scheme (including
paid and unpaid employment, training and education in the community), a
listener scheme for prisoners who may be at risk from suicide or self harm,
an anti-bullying committee."
Unless I am mistaken these could be people who are going out to daily to
work. The result of their absconding is presumably (if they are caught) that
they will be sent back to a closed prison.
I would have thought that photographs would generally be issued if the
prisoner was considered to be dangerous. It is hard to see that any prisoner
in an Open Prison being put there if they were considered dangerous.

Tim - they have absconded from prison - where they should be - finishing
their sentence - surely it is in the public interest.
Just an opinion.............by not releasing, surely it may cause anxiety to
victim's families etc.

It has always struck me that "public interest" and "public curiosity" can
merge in these circumstances. The emotive word "murderer" seems to justify
all sorts of things. We'll have bear baiting back next.
It is, of course, hugely newsworthy to agitate for the release of the
pictures, but, if they are what one might term "docile, specific victim"
murderers it seems to me to be in no-one's interest, least of all the
public's.

Lord Falconer has criticised the police force for their reluctance to
disclose the images, and as I was listening to the news on the way back to
work 20 minutes ago, BBC News announced that the photos would now be
disclosed. Funny how suddenly they feel able to do this.

I have just read an article about two escaped murderers from Sudbury prison
and Derbyshire POlice are refusing to release photographs of them as it is
not in the public interest, their human rights could be breached and the
Data Protection Act. Apparently ACPO have stated that photographs should
only be released in exceptional circumstances where officers believe that
the suspects may be a danger to the public.
Am I missing something here?
