Please join us in London on Monday 9 January 2017 for an Open Day for the V&A/RCA MA in the History of Design, and for an introduction to our new specialism in the history and material cultures of performance.

The V&A/RCA History of Design programme is internationally recognised as a leading centre for study and research in the history of design and material culture at MA and PhD level. Our staff and students teach and research cultural, social, economic, political and technological history through artefacts and our interactions with them. Projects and expertise range across global geographies, from the early fifteenth century to the contemporary.

From autumn 2017, we are offering a new elective MA specialism in the history and material cultures of performance, in conjunction with the Theatre & Performance Department at the V&A. This exciting development combines the V&A’s world-leading expertise and collections in costume, graphics, set design and other theatre and performance materials with the programme’s the programme’s track record and expertise in teaching and researching artefact-based history.

The material cultures of performance specialism will run alongside our existing MA teaching in the history of design and material culture, which spans fashion and textiles, architecture, science and technology, the material culture of politics and the everyday, early modern economic history, making/craft, practice-based history and global history through material culture.

From autumn 2017, the programme will run over fifteen months (September 2017 – December 2018), with an option for home/EU students to undertake the second part of the MA (researching and writing the dissertation ) part-time. This innovative structure offers students greater flexibility with full- and part-time study and makes the programme more financially accessible, while retaining the academic excellence and 240-credit enhanced MA degree for which the programme is known. (Information on fees can be found here; please note that the part-time option is not available to international students for visa compliance reasons.)

The new specialist area in material cultures of performance and the 15-month model are both subject to revalidation in March 2017.

The 240-credit enhanced MA is jointly taught by a dedicated team of academics based in the Research Department of the V&A and the School of Humanities at the RCA. Our websites (RCA and V&A) provide further information about the programme.

The Open Day will offer an introduction to the programme and to facilities in both institutions, as well as a chance to meet staff and current students more informally. Handling sessions and gallery tours will introduce some of the methods we use for teaching and learning.

Anyone wishing to attend must register in advance to confirm attendance. This is for security reasons at both institutions. For further details and to book a place, please contact History of Design Admin (RCA) at [log in to unmask] or (+44)20 7590 4482.

We also welcome inquiries from potential PhD students; further information on PhDs in History of Design is available on our websites (RCA and V&A).
