The Unconscious Before and After Freud and Lacan
CFP: Annual Meeting of the American Association of Geographers, Washington DC, 3rd to 7th April 2019
Session Organisers: Scott Sharpe (UNSW@ADFA Canberra) and Andrew Lapworth (University of Bristol)
This session offers an intervention into dominant understandings of the unconscious in contemporary geography, opening space for new thought and practice of the unconscious “emancipated […] from the tutelage of linguistic formalisms or topological mathemes” (Sauvagnargues, 2016: 153). While possibly informed by Freudian and Lacanian theories, the papers will explore conceptualisations of the unconscious that go beyond the narrow understanding provided by a psychoanalytic framework. Drawing on thinkers such as Leibniz, Jung, Deleuze, Guattari, Simondon and others, the papers will attempt to theorise the unconscious beyond the interiority and psychopathology of the subject.
If psychoanalytically-inspired geographers over the last few decades have been keen to think through the limits of rationality, the session arises from a more radical critique of the human subject as the basis of action and understanding. In doing so, it contributes to a theorisation of the material and non-representational forces of the world beyond a human-centred apprehension. Furthermore, and politically, it explores a thinking of the unconscious which is “not crystallised in the past, congealed in an institutional discourse, but, on the contrary, an unconscious turned towards the future” (Guattari, 2007:10).
The following is a possible, but not exhaustive, list of topics:
Microperceptions
Machinic unconscious and schizoanalysis
Micropolitics
The collective unconscious
Individuation and the pre-individual unconscious
Non-representation and the unconscious in film and/or literature
The unconscious after humanism
Collective desire and a politics of the unconscious
Symptoms and symbols beyond psychoanalysis
