AHRC Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership

Collaborative Doctoral Opportunity at the Open University
New approaches to growth and enterprise in craft-based businesses

Supervisory team: Professor Emma Bell, Professor Richard Blundel, Dr Emma Dewberry (Open University) and Julia Bennett (Crafts Council)

The early 21st century has seen a renewed interest in craft products and working practices. New organisational templates for craft-based business practice, such as craft incubators, open access ‘makerspaces’ and specialist online intermediaries, have reduced barriers to entry for craft practitioners. The focus of this project is on ways in which craft businesses can contribute to public policy imperatives around enterprise, regional development and local economic growth while also supporting practices that encourage social and ecological wellbeing. The project is multidisciplinary, combining knowledge from management and organisation studies with sustainable design. We envisage that the researcher will apply a range of broadly qualitative, participatory and practice-based methods. This will enable in-depth investigation of the distinctive identities and practices that characterise contemporary craft, with a focus on the capacity for sustainable growth and innovation.
