The British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Artificial
Intelligence (SGAI) is pleased to announce that bursaries are now
available to allow full-time research students to attend the tutorials
and workshops at the AI-2003 conference.

Although the tutorials and workshops represent excellent value for
money, the SGAI Committee is conscious of the financial
constraints placed on many research students and is therefore
delighted to be able to offer this practical financial assistance.

Applications are now invited for bursaries to attend the
tutorials/workshops to be held on the first day of the forthcoming AI-
2003 conference (i.e. Monday 15th December 2003). This year's
tutorial topics will be:

- Association rule mining and its wider context
- Knowledge engineering for automated planning
- Applying evolutionary computation, genetic programming and
local search
- Data clustering algorithms and their applications.

The three workshops, to be held on the same day, will be:

- The eighth UK Case-Based Reasoning Workshop
- AI to Support E-Government
- Practical aspects of Developing AI-Based Systems.

Details of these tutorials and workshops, and of the whole
conference, can be found at http://www.bcs-sgai.org/ai2003.

Bona-fide full-time research students are invited to apply by email
to Ms. Rosemary Gilligan ([log in to unmask]). The closing
date of Friday 21st November 2003 will be strictly applied. Your
application must include the following information:

- your name and email address;
- your research department's postal address;
- the name and address (if different from above) of your project
supervisor;
- the title of your research project;
- confirmation of your SGAI (formerly SGES) membership;
- a brief account (no more than 200 words) of why you wish to
attend the tutorials or workshops and why you would find the
bursary helpful.

The latter section will be used by the Committee to help them
allocate funds in the event that the bursaries are over-subscribed.

The guidelines for the bursary scheme are as follows:

(a) The bursary scheme will be open only to bona-fide full-time
research students who are paid-up (student) members of SGAI at
the time of applying. (Student membership currently costs only £11
p.a. and can be taken out at any time.)

(b) No more than one such bursary will ever be made to the same
individual.

(c) The Bursary will cover the following:
(i) Free attendance at tutorials/workshops
(ii) Meals, refreshments etc.
(iii) Welcome reception
(iv) Up to £100 towards the cost of travel (against receipts)

Please note that the bursary will NOT cover attendance at the other
two days of the conference or overnight accommodation (we will
provide the latter at the delegate rate of £35 a night if needed).

(d) Up to 10 bursaries will be awarded each year.
