The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers normally produced the standards for the Gas distribution Industry, Standard IGEM/TD/3 - STEEL AND PE PIPELINES FOR GAS DISTRIBUTION. Would look to cover the area of interest but I don't think it make a specific mention of what you are looking for, although it covers Environmental protection and waste. It may have been updated since the 5th edition. There is another standard Standard IGEM/TD/4 PE and steel gas services and service, but again it does not seem to cover the area of interest.

Subject: Gas pipes in contaminated land?
Morning all,
Whilst fully aware of water pipe laying requirements in potentially contaminated ground due to effects on water quality, does anyone know of any similar requirements or suggestions for testing of ground prior to laying low pressure PE gas pipes? Obviously many of the parameters noted in the various guidance by the water suppliers are directly of importance to human health in terms of affecting water quality by diffusion through the pipe and joins so I am guessing for gas pipes only gross effects that would affect the pipe structure itself would be of importance such as how aggressive certain chemicals would be to the pipe? Any help gratefully received.
Regards,
Chris Swainston
