This symposium brings together global experts on the processes that cause drought and their consequences. It will take an interdisciplinary approach, looking at the climatic and socio-economic factors that are contributing to the changing risk of drought. The symposium will explore potential approaches to the sustainable management of drought risk. The symposium forms part of the NERC UK Droughts and Water Scarcity programme.

Adaptation and Resilience in the Context of Change Network (ARCC) (Back to Top)

The ARCC network is focused on adaptation and resilience to change in the built environment and infrastructure sectors. It works at the boundary between research (funded mainly by EPSRC) and policy and practice stakeholders to help facilitate the uptake and use of research outputs.

The ARCC network can help you:

• Make your research discoverable (website, blog, ‘so what?’ research summaries)
• Make your research accessible via our project portfolio and five cross-cutting themes
• Help you comply with EPSRC’s policy framework on research data (OpenARCC)
• Broker relationships with stakeholders and / or ARCC researchers
• Bespoke training and resources for early career researchers


If your research is part of a wider Research Council funded project, contact the network with an expression of for inclusion in the project portfolio. Through inclusion your project will benefit from:

• Increased exposure, potentially to new stakeholders/networks
• Access to theme based events with opportunities for research exposure
• Archiving of your project content on the ARCC website
• Appropriate mentions in the ARCC newsletter & through other social media outlets


Whether project based or individually led research, you can create a ‘So what? Now what?’ research summary and social media teaser. Simply download and complete the templates and return them. They will be refined, published and circulated and you’ll receive a report of their impact after 2 months. The network regularly has thematic competitions and is open to joining forces with other networks for joint calls.

The ARCC network’s current active competition call is for research findings related to water and energy infrastructure interdependencies and innovation. Closing date is 11th September.

Environmental Modelling in Industry - Study Group (Back to Top)

Background

PURE Network is collaborating with Maths Foresees and Turing Gateway to Mathematics to organise the Environmental Study Group with Industry in Cambridge between 21st and 24thSeptember 2015.
The event will follow the usual Study Group with Industry format, where the problems are presented on Monday morning and the research split into group for the following days to solve the problems.

Challenges

The challenges that will be tackled at the study group are currently being formulated in collaboration with: Fugro GEOS, JBA Trust, the Met Office and, tentatively, the Environment Agency.

The challenge that will be presented by JBA Trust is Identification of Coherent Weather Features in Three Dimensions. Identification of weather features is crucial to both understanding the atmospheric processes occurring and predicting how the atmosphere may evolve. Two examples of weather features that have been objectively identified and how that information is used are presented. The identification of weather features in three dimensions presents an interesting problem that will be explored at the Study Group.

The challenge that will be presented by Fugro GEOS is Statistical Framework for Utilisation of Modelled Data for Tropical Cyclones. We are increasingly asked to produce wind and wave design criteria e.g. 100-year or 10,000-year return period values for tropical cyclones in regions where such events occur relatively infrequently. We are able to model individual storms, although getting both the storm track and intensity to match historical data is not easy. However, we would like to explore the statistical validity of this approach and to see whether there is a rigorous way of deciding how many of the multiple model runs for an individual storm can be included in the database.

The challenge to be presented by the Met Office will related to parameterizing convection in a 2D slice.

The challenge that will be presented by the Environment Agency is Dealing with Spatial Rainfall Distribution in Flood Forecasts. Usually spatially uniform rainfall and hydrology is assumed in most flood modelling. This could be overestimating risk leading to increased costs, or missing the critical patterns that lead to significantly damaging floods. Techniques to alleviate this are, for example, continuous simulation and Monte-Carlo analysis. The question is whether the extra cost and time, if any, involved is worth the added confidence. The challenge for the mathematicians is to find an approach that gets some of the benefits of a more detailed approach, with only a minimal increase in modelling. We could focus on identifying which are the critical samples to analyse in the range of all possible flood events. Or we could try to screen those situations when uniform rainfall is not fit for purpose so we only use more detailed methods when needed.
