Introduction to Cataloguing and Classification

Tuesday 22nd May: 9.00 – 16.30

Exeter College, Hele Road, Exeter

A one-day workshop to introduce you to the basic elements of cataloguing and classification.

This event has been generously supported by the CILIP South West Division (Formerly CILIP SW, CDG West Country and CDG Devon and Cornwall), Exeter College and SWRLS

Designed with the non-cataloguer in mind, this workshop will introduce you to the basic components in the standard catalogue record and offer the chance to engage in practical development of skill in this area of work.

Ideal as an introduction to this area for those who may have entered the library profession through a non-traditional route, or those who are keen to expand their skill range, or for those who wish to update their knowledge.

Areas to be covered include:

• The building blocks of a catalogue record:

            Descriptive cataloguing

            Subject headings and classification

• An introduction to AACR2

• An introduction to MARC 21

• The purpose of classification

• The Dewey Decimal Classification System

Please contact [log in to unmask] for the full programme details.

 Workshop leader: Keith V. Trickey

Keith is lead trainer for Sherrington Sanders and was a part time senior lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University. He has been delivering training in these areas for more than fifteen years and is known for his enthusiasm and humour when dealing with complex topics, making the content more readily available to participants.
