Dear colleagues,

I'm putting this out there (below), as it's a really good opportunity to get PhD funding, provided you have an idea for PhD research that relates to forests. It can be any discipline, but would have to be based at Birmingham University (I'd be happy to supervise you if your project relates at all to anything I do). Let me know if you have any ideas for this: deadline is 10th December, so you'd have to be in touch this week for us to make this work. (NB: if you're interested I'll send you the attachment).

All the best,
Pat

Subject: Forest Edge Call for Proposals

Dear all,

We’re pleased to announce that the process for the second cohort of PhD scholarships through the Leverhulme funded BIFoR Forest Edge programme is now live. The process and timelines for developing and advertising project proposals is below with relevant details. You will see that this year we have incorporated two “streams” for proposals to allow potential projects to be advertised, (as is more common in STEM subjects), as well as proposals developed collaboratively with a prospective student, (as is more common in the humanities). Please see attached for details; note, prospective supervisors from any discipline can follow either stream to develop a proposal.

If you have any queries please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Please accept our apologies for any cross-postings

With best wishes

Rob MacKenzie
Director of BIFoR

[University of Birmingham]

New Forest Edge PhD Scholarships

The Forest Edge Doctoral Scholarships Programme will offer 20 Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships at the University of Birmingham from 2018 - 2020.

Forest Edge will offer a comprehensive training programme to develop researchers and prepare them for post-PhD life in industry, academia, and other sectors.

The programme is partially funded by a £1,050,000 grant from the Leverhulme Trust. Each Scholarship covers maintenance costs (at Research Council levels), tuition fees, and research and training expenses for the doctoral student over three years.

Call for project proposals is now open

Open to all disciplines

University of Birmingham academics from all disciplines are invited to submit a Forest Edge PhD-project proposal to recruit the first cohort of Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholars, who will start in October 2019.

Outline proposals should be submitted by 17:00 on Monday 10 December 2018.

Find out how to submit a proposal »<https://intranet.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/resources/pg-recruitment/forest-edge.aspx>

Themes

Each doctoral project will identify a major theme and a dominant cross-link, binding it to other projects. Some projects will be multi-disciplinary, some interdisciplinary, and some transdisciplinary, but all will be outside the research council norm, challenging doctoral researchers (DRs) and supervisors alike.

Through monthly 'exploration meetings', we will bring the cohort together to extend science and scholarship into entirely new areas.
