Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership PhD Studentships in French; German; Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; and Interpreting and Translation at Newcastle University

The Northern Bridge Doctoral Training Partnership invites top-calibre applicants to apply to its 2018/19 doctoral studentships competition. More than seventy fully-funded doctoral studentships are available across the full range of arts and humanities subjects, including French; German; Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies; and Interpreting and Translation.

Northern Bridge is an exciting, AHRC-funded collaboration between Newcastle University, Durham University, Queen's University Belfast, Ulster University, Northumbria University, Sunderland University, and Teesside University. Our aim is to deliver outstanding doctoral education in the arts and humanities, and successful applicants will join a thriving cohort of almost fifty Northern Bridge PhD students recruited through last year's studentship competition. Northern Bridge offers exceptional supervision by academic staff researching at the cutting edge of their disciplines, vibrant research environments that promote interdisciplinary enquiry, and research training and career development opportunities tailored to the needs of twenty-first-century researchers.

Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies offers supervision in the following areas:

*       Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American cultural history and popular culture (Dr Jorge Catalá-Carrasco, Dr Nick Morgan, Dr Patricia Oliart, Dr Fruela Fernández, Dr Dunja Fehimoviĉ, and Dr Fernando Beleza)
*       discourses of race and identity in Latin America (Prof Rosaleen Howard, Dr Patricia Oliart, Dr Nick Morgan, Dr Dunja Fehimoviĉ and Dr Fernando Beleza)
*       Latin American film, literature, and theatre (Dr Philippa Page, Dr Dunja Fehimoviĉ and Dr Fernando Beleza)
*       history of education in 19th- and 20th-century Latin America (Prof Jens Hentschke, Dr Patricia Oliart and Prof Rosaleen Howard)
*       youth cultures and social movements, music and politics (Dr Patricia Oliart, Dr Fruela Fernández and Dr Fernando Beleza)
*       Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American novels (Dr Jorge Catalá-Carrasco and Dr Fernando Beleza)
*       political, social, and intellectual history of Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries, especially Brazil and the Southern Cone (Prof Jens Hentschke)
*       anthropology, anthropological linguistics, and sociolinguistics of Latin America, including Quechua language (Prof Rosaleen Howard)
*       semantics, philosophy of language, history and spread of Spanish in Latin America, Latin American dialects and Creole (Prof Ian Mackenzie)
*       politics of translation as linguistic and conceptual practice (Dr Fruela Fernández)
*       Catalan nationalism (Dr Jorge Catalá-Carrasco)
*       film, literature, and popular culture of the Spanish-speaking Caribbean and its diasporas (Dr Dunja Fehimoviĉ)

We provide a comprehensive and attractive package of financial support over the duration of study, which incorporates:

*       fees and maintenance at the UK Research Councils' national rate
*       a research training support grant (RTSG) to fund the costs of study abroad, conference attendance and fieldwork
*       financial support to attend our cohort-building events
*       financial support to incorporate placements, international study visits and specialist training events in order to develop your skills.
