hello cris -
I sympathize with much of what you say, particularly re: unfolding amid
and as social determinants; I'd be especially interested to understand a
little more fully how we get around the high/low organization mechanism (I
still find myself adhering to this with what I imagine to be fairly
productive vehemence. But maybe it's really something else I'm groping
after?) Are you convinced at all by say Adorno's rubbishing of much (if
not all) of culture? The critical suppression of repute through immanent
critique? Can we not say that there is an historically informed,
categorical difference between the qualities defining the relevance of
(say) Beethoven's 9th symphony on the one hand and (say) Jimmy Nail's
song 'Crocodile Shoes' on the other? Isn't the recognition of this
difference (if we do recognize it) implicity an evaluation? Is it just
the politically infested allegory of a value hierarchy that needs doing
away with, or the whole propensity to define differences in value? Does
it matter that we use high and low as markers, understanding the sweep of
their suggestiveness? Doesn't money have a good deal to do with promoting
the actual -necessity- of retaining these markers?
I'm interested, not sure, k
