News from the CHURCH OF ENGLAND
DIOCESE OF PORTSMOUTH
9th September 2003

HISTORIC CHURCH OPEN DAY

ARCHAEOLOGICAL discoveries at St Mary's Church Portsmouth may cause the
history books to be rewritten. Following the news that the remains of a
Saxon Church may lie hidden beneath the current building, the church is
having an open day on Saturday 13th September for people who want to find
out more.

For those who fancy themselves as a budding archaeologist then there will
be the chance to have a go in one of the mock digs and to sign up to become
more involved in the future. The archeologist leading the project, Kate
Longcliffe, will also be available to answer questions.

The event ties in with the Historic Churches Sponsored Bike ride, which
sees hundreds of enthusiastic cyclists riding between many different
churches to raise money to help maintain the fabric of our heritage. The
church tower will also be open, offering one of the finest views in Portsmouth.

Canon Bob White, the Vicar of Portsea said "Saturday morning is an
opportunity for people to come and see what has been happening here and
also to get more involved with archeology in the future. When it comes to
digging up the ground to see exactly what is there we want as many people
as possible from the local community to be involved in discovering about
the history of this part of Portsmouth, this is a chance for them to come
and find out more"
