Dear everybody,

For those who may not know about it, I attach a copy of the current version
of the International Sociological Association's Research Group 38 devoted to
'Biography and Society'. The conferences of RC 38 have been really
exciting places for those engaged in biographic research. I hope you find it
interesting.

Prue and I recently did one and two day workshops in Plymouth and Newcastle
Universities which we think (but ask the attendees!) did well, and the ESRC
have invited us to do a 2-day workshop under their auspices in January
2005, perhaps at the Institute of Education in London. When we get the
flyer, we'll post it to you so that you can circulate it on to anybody you
think might wish to attend.

Other news: we are moving to the final stage of our 3-year qualitative
evaluation research work into a Healthy Living Centre in Bromley-by-Bow,
East London. This work is largely based on biographic-narrative interviewing
(as well as other methods, such as institutional observation and participant
observation) which we think have been really fruitful. Our final report is
due by February-March 2005, and we'll let you know when it comes out. See
website address below.

Kip Jones has sent us a draft bibliography in biographical (not just BNIM)
research. I've asked him to include material of his own, but he hasn't
replied. KIP, if you read this, can you modify the text you send me (or not)
and send it to the list directly? OTHER PEOPLE: badger Kip!

Best wishes from Prue and me to everybody.

Do let others know what you're up to. Most of us are fairly isolated
BNIM-wise in our institutions, and news about even mundane things that other
people are doing can be surprisingly supportive!

Best wishes

Tom

P.S. If you or anybody else wants my 20-page guide to BNIM interviewing or
research now or in the future, just drop me a line for an e-copy. The latest
version is .17. The main changes are in the bibliography pages, but I update
other bits from time to time.

My last article published for those not allergic to psychodynamic concerns
is

Lynn Roggett and Tom Wengraf. 2004. 'Interpreting interviews in the light of
research team dynamics: a study of Nila's biographic interview'. Critical
Psychology vol.10., 94-122

People often ask: what would the study of a single (BNIM) case be like?

I've just published one that you can access easily by downloading it from
the electronic journal "FQS" entitled
"Boundaries and Relationships in Homelessness Work: Lola, an Agency
Manager". It represents one way of writing up such a case. See it at:

If you are interested in the current BNIM-using research going on into the
working of the community Healthy Living Centre in East London mentioned
above, you could look at the following website.
