The School of Mathematics at the University of Southampton, UK, is holding an open day
to give prospective graduate students an opportunity to visit the School, hear
presentations on current research and possible PhD projects in all areas of Mathematics,
including Statistics.
The Statistics group is part of Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI),
one of the largest groups of academic Statisticians in the UK. The focus of the Institute is
methodological research and substantive applications, with many projects joint with other
sciences, engineering and industry.
PhD topics are available in the areas of Statistical Modelling, Design and Analysis of
Experiments, and Biostatistics.
Funding is available from a variety of sources, including the Doctoral Training Account,
Doctoral Training Centres (DTC), and School scholarships. Overseas students may be
eligible for industrial DTC and School scholarships.
The programme for the day is:
11:15-12:00: Campus tour for early arrivers.
12:00-13:30: Arrival and lunch with staff and current postgraduate students.
13:30-14:00: Overview of PhD study and funding at Southampton.
14:15-16:45: Presentations by research groups, interviews and individual meetings with
potential supervisors.
16:45 onwards: Refreshments.
Travel expenses (e.g. standard rail fare or similar) will be reimbursed.
