Vacancy No. 12/11-EMRP
The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, economy and science.
Within the scope of a European research project of the European Metrology Programme EMRP involving research institutes from 7 countries, Department 8.4 "Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis" is looking for a
scientist
specialised in applied mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics or a comparable theoretical engineering science to join in as soon as possible. The post is limited to 3 years. The remuneration will be paid up to remuneration group 14 TVöD Bund (85 %) according to your personal preconditions. If you are interested, you may be given the opportunity of obtaining a doctoral degree (PhD) (remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund / 85 %). You will be employed at our Berlin site.
Background:
For modern systems, the form of optical elements such as lenses or mirrors must frequently be known with nanometer accuracy. This is a very demanding task, in particular when the surfaces are strongly curved. In this context, the sponsored EMRP project aims to develop a novel interferometer to be used in sub-aperture optical form measurement. The development is based on a mathematical modelling of the measurement and on using simulation procedures to
perform virtual experiments. In addition, Department 8.4 is involved in the analysis of measurements carried out by project partners. At PTB, the project is attended in particular by Department 8.4 "Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis" and Department 4.2 “Imaging and Wave Optics”.
Key activities:
• Mathematical modelling of optical form measurements
• Development of virtual experiments
• Statistical data analysis
Requirements:
• Completed university studies in a relevant subject
• Aptitude for the mathematical/statistical analysis of experiments and measurement
processes
• Experience with at least one of the potential key activities
• Passion for independent scientific work, as well as for team and project work
• Readiness to cooperate with European institutes and industrial partners
• Very good command of English and ability to present results convincingly in spoken and
written language.
