Job ref 214183 Closing date 20 June 2008
Role Summary
To provide and develop a comprehensive statistical consultancy as part of the Yorkshire and Humber Research Design Service (YHRDS) for NHS staff in West Yorkshire. As Principal Medical Statistician you will be involved in a wide range of statistical activities, including funding applications, general consulting to NHS health professionals and teaching. The post will be located within Leeds CTRU and professional support and personal development will be provided both by the YHRDS and CTRU.
Background - Yorkshire and Humber Research Design Service (YHRDS)
The Yorkshire and Humber Research Design Service (YHRDS) is a new initiative funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) to provide methodological advice to researchers in the Yorkshire and Humberside Strategic Health Authority in order to increase the number and proportion of high quality funding applications for applied research achieved through: disseminating information; providing advice; referring researchers to experts and services; learning events; supporting linkages and collaborations; offering peer review; monitoring the quality of services, and exploring the wider impact of research. In particular NIHR Research for Patient Benefit (RfPB) submissions indicate a lack of experience in converting clinical ideas into good research designs, suggesting a need for support. The YHRDS is a White Rose academic collaboration, adopting a hub and spoke model, with university sites in Sheffield (Hub), Leeds and York, and built-in links to the NHS.
The YHRDS will comprise statisticians, health economists, qualitative researchers, patient and public involvement experts, systematic reviewers and public health specialists working within and across the 3 universities.
Background - Clinical Trials Research Unit
The CTRU is a NHS-funded, National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI) accredited, UKCRC registered research unit based at the University of Leeds within the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine and has a national and international reputation for conducting complex, multi-centre clinical trials. The CTRU works with NHS partners and University colleagues, providing academic support and infrastructure to enable local, national and international researchers, design and undertake high quality, rigorous, multi-centre trials to MRC/ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. The CTRU is a strong unit and underpins a large amount of trials work undertaken in the UK.
Background - Yorkshire and Humberside Strategic Health Authority
Yorkshire and the Humber (Y&H), the fourth largest Strategic Health Authority (SHA) in England, includes 22 hospitals and 14 Primary Care Trusts with a population of over 5 million (10% of UK population). It includes two of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe with internationally recognised research in cardiology, oncology, immunology, minimally invasive surgery, biomaterials and tissue engineering. Particular clinical trials strengths exist in cancer, older people and diabetes (Hospitals: Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford and Universities: Sheffield, Leeds, York). Y&H also has a unique cluster of medical devices companies in the UK.
The Y&H region embraces a diverse mix of communities ranging from cities (Leeds, Bradford, York and Sheffield) to rural and remote areas. Health inequalities exist for example there are 1,800 extra deaths each year compared to the national average. Although there is a strong track record in high quality clinical research, currently Research Development Support Unit (RDSU) support covers only a third of the region. 12% of RfPB funding has currently been allocated here, but only 1/5 of peer reviewed applications were recommended for funding, illustrating a need for research support, and a waste of opportunities to make use of good ideas.
