The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) undertakes high quality, internationally recognised research in land and freshwater environments. Our research portfolio responds to the changing requirements of our customers in government, academia, industry and commerce - nationally and internationally. We collaborate in Europe-wide scientific activities, through the science programmes of the European Union. Our research areas are managed through three interdependent Science Programmes (Water, Biodiversity and Biogeochemistry). We are seeking an experienced statistician to work within our Water Programme at the CEH headquarters in Wallingford.
Main purpose
The work of the Water programme include flood, low flow and drought risk estimation, flood forecasting and hydro-ecological research. The post will be within the Flood and Rainfall Frequency Estimation team. The role's focus is on leading statistical analyses within a variety of research projects, but particularly on hydrological extremes. There will be some element of providing statistical advice to a range of hydrologists. There will also be a need to develop and adapt methodologies when standard statistical methods are not fully suited. Appropriate training will be provided in a number of areas to assist the appointed researcher to develop cutting edge skills to support career progression.
Skills required
Candidates will be expected to have a degree, or other recognised qualification, in statistics and some project based experience of applied statistical work in a University or research environment. Existing knowledge of hydrology, climatology or meteorology would be an advantage, particularly in the area of extremes. The research based nature of the post means the role would be ideally suited to someone with an aptitude for solving complex problems, self-motivated and with enthusiasm for the subject. You are required to have good communication skills, particularly to be able to explain complicated statistical issues in plain English.
