INTELLIGENT AGENTS FOR COMPUTER SUPPORTED CO-OPERATIVE WORK:
                   TECHNOLOGY AND RISKS

Workshop at: Fourth International Conference on Autonomous Agents
             June, 3 - 7, 2000, Barcelona, Spain
(http://www.wirtschaft.tu-ilmenau.de/wi/wi2/agents00-cscw-agents)

                     CALL FOR PAPERS

===============================================================

Deadlines:
   March 17th: Submission of Papers
   April 3rd: Notification of Acceptance
April 10th: Submission of Camera-Ready Copy
June 3-4th: Workshop at Agents 2000

===============================================================

INTRODUCTION:

The increasing use of networking, coupled with an increasing
distribution in the operations of organisations, results in
increasing problems of administration, management and control
of information and co-ordination of work. With the aim of
providing solutions to such problems, research into Computer
Supported Co-operative Work (CSCW) is concerned with
investigating approaches and technologies for the support of
group work, both within and among organisations, in which the
group members may be distributed geographically.

In parallel with the advances made in CSCW in recent years there have
been interesting developments in the fields of Intelligent Agents and
Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), notably in the concepts,
theories and deployment of intelligent agents as a means of
distributing computer-based problem solving expertise. The concept of
intelligent agents has given rise to an exciting new technology of
wide potential applicability. In particular, the paradigm of
multi-agent systems, which is also a focus of interest for researchers
in distributed artificial intelligence, forms a good basis for (i) the
design of CSCW architectures, and (ii) the support of CSCW operations.

The application of a multi-agent approach to CSCW can help to
make information exchange among the participants easier, provide
support to the participants (e.g. in the form of Decision Support
Systems), assist workflows and procedures, and represent the user in a
CSCW system.

But, the introduction of intelligent agents into CSCW systems as well
as into legacy information systems may lead to potential new risks,
e.g. unauthorised information gain, unauthorised modification of
information, unauthorised derogation of functionality, or inadmissible
loss of connection. Endowing agents with intelligence increases the
risks and threats, compared with conventional communications systems
and information systems.

SUBMISSION:

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- user agents in CSCW systems,
- DAI architectures and CSCW systems,
- security aspects of agent-based CSCW systems,
- intelligent agents in CSCW (e.g. for decision support,
   coordination, automation)
- applications of agent-based / mediated CSCW.

Submissions to the workshop should not exceed 8 pages in length
and should preferably be emailed, or, alternatively, posted
(5 copies) to one of the contact persons below.

The final camera-ready copy must conform to the ACM format,
for which formatting instructions can be found at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html

All accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. In
addition, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an
extend version of their paper for subsequent publication in a special
issue of an international journal.
