Introduction

We are approaching the half-way point of the AGFORWARD project (supported by the EU through the FP7 research programme) which is promoting agroforestry (the integration of trees with farming) across Europe. Hence this newsletter partly looks back at recent outputs and partly looks forward. Let's start by looking forward! In 2016, AGFORWARD will be supporting the Third European Agroforestry Conference in France and an agroforestry workshop at the Integrated Farming Systems Conference in the UK.

Looking back, in September AGFORWARD supported a successful "Agroforestry Day" at EXPO2015 in Milan. We have also placed on the AGFORWARD website a "Climate picking" tool which can be used to derive existing climate predictions for locations in Europe. In the past few weeks, we have also placed four summaries of our agroforestry research and development plans on the website.

As always, we try to provide the latest updates from the project through the AGFORWARD Facebook page.

With best wishes

Paul Burgess
AGFORWARD Project Co-ordinator

AGFORWARD at EXPO2015

Image

Back in September, AGFORWARD worked with the European Agroforestry Federation and the Italian Agroforestry Association to support a successful “Agroforestry Day” at the European Union Pavilion at EXPO2015 in Milan. The photograph above shows the “Tree of Life” situated immediately outside the pavilion. Copies of the presentations are available on the AGFORWARD website.

Accessing predicted climate across Europe

Image

Part of the AGFORWARD project involves describing the responses of trees and crops over the next 30-60 years using bio-physical computer models. In order to run the models, we need daily weather data for different locations. João Palma, from the University of Lisbon, has therefore developed a searchable on-line database called "CliPick" which allows you to access existing climate predictions for different locations across Europe.

Synthesis of research protocols: agroforestry with high value trees

Image

The last newsletter gave details of the individual research protocols for the stakeholder groups involved with the grazing or intercropping of high value trees such as apples, olives, chestnuts or walnuts. The 13 individual research and development protocols have now been summarised in a single document.
