Dear All
I know there's been intermittent debate and questions about specific aspects of electronic enrolment, and if there are summaries anywhere of responses then they would be gratefully received. We at the University of Southamton are planning to introduce electronic enrolment this coming session, using SCT's Banner system via a Web interface. There are clearly many considerations to take into account before the process design can be finalised, and we're in the thick of looking at these at the moment. However, in particular I'd be very interested to hear from colleagues at other institutions about whether they've handled new entrants differently to continuing students.
Our proposal is to ask continuing students to enrol remotely before the start of term, i.e. from home or other location from, say, 1 September. However, new entrants will be asked to physically present themselves at their School on the first day of their term so that documents can be checked and other information distributed about induction etc. These students will then enrol at a workstation on campus (or at their Hall, or elsewhere if preferred). In other words, access to enrolment screens will not be available to new entrants until Schools have seen them and 'authorised' enrolment. The logistical and technical aspects of this are under discussion, but could colleagues who have done electronic enrolment tell me:
(a) Have you made the distinction between new entrants and continuing students?
(b) If you have, and continuing students were asked to enrol remotely, what percentage actually did so (i.e. how many turned up on the first day expecting to be able to do it then?). Please could you give the number of students involved.
(c) If you didn't make the distinction, did you ask all students, including new entrants, to enrol remotely before the start of term? If yes, did they all do this, and if not, how did you handle those that didn't? Again, please could you give approximate numbers.
Any responses would be gratefully received, including an update on the recent question which went round on how to solve the 'proof of enrolment' conundrum!
Many thanks to colleagues in advance.
Best Wishes
