I did at one stage consider a randomised trial of a special "intervention team" triggered by lab. results versus usual care. With the country's largest orthopaedics unit there was plenty of scope! However, I don't have the time due to other commitments but if anybody wants to take it on it might be interesting.

I do not know whether it has been tried before or not but I think it
would make a good sense academically provided that the parameters are
going to be defined quite strictly otherwise the workload could spiral
out of control.
Best wishes

Subject: Fluid balance
I've just been to an NPSA meeting where we discussed overhydration.
There was general dissatisfaction about fluid balance charts and
weighing patients (and i can't see any reason that they will improve).
Someone suggested an outreach approach to fluid balance management...
possibly a bit like TPN teams, acute pain teams and critical care
outreach.
Does any one know if this approach has been tried... and any opinions on
whether chemical pathologists* should get involved?
Thanks
Jonathan
*I was once asked to do this by an orthopaedic surgeon. I made my
excuses and left.
