I can only think of the following: An episode (in Lapland I think) in Axel Munthe's "San Michele". Braun the interpreter in "The Commodore" by CS Forester. It is a naval story set in the Baltic during the Napoloeonic Wars. (He is the villain, I'm afraid!)
