Call for papers

The Cultural reconstruction of Europe in 1945

Proposals are invited for papers at a Workshop in the ISSEI 2000
conference at the University of Bergen, Norway, 14-18 August 2000

Chaired by Michael Kelly and Alan Bance (University of
Southampton, UK)

The workshop will examine the pivotal moment during and after 1945,
when culture played a central role in the post-war reconstruction of
most European countries. In the brief interlude between the end of the
Second World War and the onset of the Cold War, there emerged a
broad but ambiguous concept of Europe, rooted in culture.

The hope that a common European culture might provide the basis for
post-war peace and prosperity was largely overtaken by political
developments, though it was a factor in the establishment of
subsequent pan-European institutions. In the period since 1989, the
increasing speed of social and economic integration has again
highlighted culture as a key dimension of Europe, whether as a means
or as an obstacle to further integration. It is hoped that a better
understanding of 1945 will both elucidate an important moment in
European cultural history and yield insights that may illuminate the
cultural development of Europe today.

Each paper will last 20 minutes, followed by discussion. A written
version of 3000 words will be published subsequently in the
conference proceedings on CD-ROM.

Fuller details of the conference are available at the Website:
