POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
Commencing salary in the range stlg16,286 - stlg18,915 pa

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to play a key role in a
qualitative research study funded by the Cancer Research Campaign.  The
project, lasting 2 years, will explore knowledge, attitudes and beliefs in
relation to tobacco use among Bangladeshi and Pakistani men and women in
Newcastle upon Tyne and, working with the local Bangladeshi and Pakistani
communities, assess the acceptability of a range of evidence-based smoking
cessation interventions.  You will be based in the Department of Epidemiology
& Public Health and supervised by Dr Martin White, Senior Lecturer in Public
Health and Director of the Health Promotion Research Group.

You will have a first degree in a numerate, social or life science, a PhD (or
equivalent research degree or experience) and postgraduate experience of
qualitative research, preferably in health promotion, ethnicity & health, or a
related public health field.  You will: develop topic guides for in depth
interviews and focus groups; help to train members of the local Bangladeshi
and Pakistani communities in interviewing techniques; oversee translation of
materials into appropriate languages; conduct interviews and focus groups;
oversee translation and transcription of interview tapes; working with other
members of the research team, analyse all transcripts and other research
outputs; work with members of local primary health care teams, health
promotion staff, community members and the research teamwork, develop
acceptable smoking cessation interventions; and with colleagues, draft reports
on the research making appropriate recommendations.

The post is offered full-time for 24 months, but part-time work or job-sharing
may be possible.
