0100,0100,0100CALL FOR CONFERENCE PAPERS Cultural Identity, Difference and Resistance 23 September (Saturday) 2000 St. Mary’s College, Twickenham This interdisciplinary conference will explore the links and tensions between the desire for a democratic form of life, personal liberty, and the preservation and creation of cultural identities and difference. These three imperatives cannot be easily reconciled and are often in uneasy or actual conflict. Their integration is an important political, social and cultural project with which activists and theorists must engage for a truly democratic society to develop. The conference programme will include two well-known keynote speakers. The key themes to be addressed in this conference are: * minority identities and cultures of resistance * the problem of ‘the Other’ in ethics, morality and religion * policing identity and difference: politics, policy and practice * cultural representations of difference Proposals for papers -up to 250 words- should include title, topic, summary, your affiliation and subject area.
