APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR A POSITION IN COMPARATIE RELIGION WITH A
SPECIALIZATION IN MEDIEVAL THOUGHT AND PRACTICE

Western Michigan University expects to fill the position listed, pending
budgetary approval, effective Fall 2000.

MEDIEVAL CHRISTIAN THOUGHT AND PRACTICE:  Teach graduate and
undergraduate
courses in Christian thought and practice, especially those having to do
with
Medieval Christianity in cooperation with the Medieval Institute, as
well as
course in Comparative Religion such as Religions of the World. 
Knowledge of
languages appropriate to research in the Medieval period are required. 
Preference will be given to candidates who not only have significant
knowledge and research skills concerning the Medieval period, but who
also
have a general knowledge of the religions of the world, and a grasp of
the
theoretical and methodological issues relevant to the academic study of
religion.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Ph.D. in the history of Christian thought and practice
(or
evidence of imminent award thereof) and a record of scholarly research
are
required.

RANK & SALARY:  Assistant Professor, Tenure track -- salary competitive
and
commensurate with qualifications and experience.

DEPARTMENT:   The Department of Comparative Religion has nine faculty
members
with specializations in African religions, Indian religions, Japanese
religions, Chinese religions, and American religions, as well as
religions
which cross cultural boundaries such as Buddhism, Christianity, and
Islam. 
It also places an emphasis upon theoretical and methodological issues,
as
well as pedagogy.  It offers an undergraduate major in religion, and an
M.A.
and Ph.D. in Comparative Religion.  New faculty are expected to develop
additional graduate and undergraduate offerings, advise graduate student
research, and conduct on-going research in their own areas of
specialization.
