Dear Jonathan I strongly recommend Ann Oakley's book 'Social Support and Motherhood: the natural history of a research project', published in 1992 by Blackwells. The project was an RCT and the book is a very good read - it even discusses the difficulty of collecting accurate quantitative data for something as straightforward as the birthweight.
