I agree in part with what you say Pete, however, some lists/newsgroups
are very active and do have quite a good following.
I think the problems occur when people send one message to all the lists
that they are on in the hope that they might get some feedback to
whatever questions they are asking, be it related or not. I too find it
very frustrating but its just one of those things. The more list that
are started, the more lists we join, the more we are likely to have the
Cross Posting Problem.

The " Apology for Cross Posting " message which does appear from time to
time is a good indicator that the sender is aware of what they are
doing., but this still does not solve the problem.

One other thing which I also find annoying is that people tend to reply
to the sender and not the list, so some good feedback on various topics
is lost to the majority of the group.

Well I hope that this might stark off a debate or are we just the only
ones left on the list? :-)

Hi,

I must admit I too have considered cancelling my subscription to this
list.
The reason for this is the number of messages that are cross posted to
(and
from) other lists. For some reason this seems to be a particular problem
with mailbase lists - and as I subscribe to a number of different
mailbase
lists I often end up getting four or five versions of the same message.

It would seem to me that there is a problem here. If the messages are
really
of interest to the members of four or five different mailbase lists then
there would seem to be a good argument for merging those lists. If the
messages are not relevant to the lists they are posted to, it would seem
to
be a good idea for the different mailbase lists to discourage
inappropriate
cross posting.

Best wishes,
Pete MacKichan [log in to unmask]
