Hello Thomas,

The terminology is confusing because, although we have physiotherapy assistants in NSW Australia, they are more akin to the American Physical therapy aides. they do a simple course which teaches how to handle and supervise patients, some occupational health and safety strategies to care for themselves but they do not treat patients as such. theoretically they are not even allowed to give ultrasound.

The title was recently changed from aide to assistant here but the assistant here is not the assistant I encountered in the USA when i worked there. In the USA, they could treat and were highly trained in that respect but did not assess or prescribe treatment.

consequently, I don't think a clinical placement could be arranged but one of the schools may be able to confirm this.

Cheers,

Anna

Subject: Australian PTA clinical affiliations ??

Are there any Australian medical facilities that would be interested in
hosting two USA Physical Therapist Assistant students for a clinical
rotation? Although I suspect that formal training programs for an assistant
to the physiotherapist probably do not exist in Australia, I'm wondering if
there might be a physio or physio  practice who would be willing to
participate in overseeing a 6 - 8 week clinical affiliation(internship?) of
two of my students.

In advance, please forgive my ignorance of the Australian physiotherapist
training and practice. Many thanks for any help offered.
