I wonder whether other issues besides the emergence of Christianity & resistance to Rome by Akiba & his contemporaries were at stake in the definition of a Hebrew canon. The danger of assimilation into the Hellenistic world is evident well before the Roman's came to dominate Judea, cf. Macchabees.
