THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY

THE INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES, THE HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER, & THE
DOREEN B.TOWNSEND CENTER FOR THE HUMANITIES

wish to invite applications for post-doctoral fellowships from individuals
engaged in research and writing on the question of:

Community in Crisis: Justice, Tolerance and Reconstruction

During the academic year 2000-2001, with funding from The Rockefeller
Foundation, Berkeley will begin the first year of a three-year project on
the theme of "Community in Contention." The project intends to explore
the meanings, uses and prospects for the idea of community in its social,
political, and cultural expressions at the end of the twentieth century.
Future themes include communities in exile, community and democracy, and
community governance. For the forthcoming year (2000-2001) the project
will focus on communities in various forms of crisis (genocide, civil war,
economic breakdown, "natural" disasters) and how questions of
accountability, identity, tolerance, and reconstruction are represented
and addressed in light of these crises.

Applications are welcome from the social sciences, humanities, and legal,
health and human rights fields. Regional, comparative, and
interdisciplinary interests are especially welcome. In addition to their
individual writing and research, fellows will participate in seminars,
conferences and other activities relevant to the overall themes of the
project. Applicants need not be U.S. citizens. For further information
and details of the application see the Institute of International Studies
