While it is correct to point out that the Septuagint was also of Jewish origin,
it should also be noted that later Jewish scholarship was concerned about
Hellenizing tendencies in it, and also the fact that the only extant copies of
the Septuagint are all from the Christian era.  Because of this, Jewish
scholarship relies on the Masoretic Text.  The discovery of the Dead Sea
Scrolls, with some copies of Biblical books (such as Samuel) before the
Christian era, similar to the LXX in some ways but often different from both
the MT and the LXX, has greatly facilitated Biblical scholarship in both
