Please circulate to colleagues notice of the following conference:

"The Fall of the Wall"

Marking the tenth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

A one-day conference on 11 November 1999 in London

The fall of the Wall in Berlin in November 1989 marked a historical
watershed. It seemed to be the end of the East West Divide in Europe.
However, although Germany is re-united and East European countries are
gradually being integrated into European institutions and
communication processes, there are still many significant differences
between Eastern and Western Europe.

The proposed conference will explore the nature and causes of this
continuing gap within Europe ten years after the fall of the Berlin
Wall. It will address questions such as: What is the future for a
European civil society? Will it be predominantly an open market, a
superpower, a political fortress, or a Europe that serves the needs of
citizens in Europe and beyond? What implications does the new Europe
have for changing patterns of ethnicity and gender?

Speakers include:
Dr. Howard Caygill (University of Sussex)
Dr Barbara Einhorn (University of Sussex)
Prof Scott Lash (Goldsmiths College)
Prof Claus Offe (Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin)
Prof William Outhwaite (University of Sussex)
