MRC Research Studentship in Bioinformatics/Intelligent Data Analysis Birkbeck College and University College, London Applications are invited for a MRC PhD studentship, within the Intelligent Data Analysis (IDA) Group at Birkbeck College and the Biomolecular Structure Modelling (BSM) Unit at University College London. The studentship will apply intelligent data analysis and data mining techniques to reveal structure-function relationships in protein families, e.g. to relate HIV virus mutants with their drug resistance. The studentship will be either for three years (for candidates with a strong background in both computing and biochemistry), or for four years (for those who might benefit from attending the one-year MRes Bioinformatics Course within the Joint Research School in Biomolecular Sciences at Birkbeck/UCL). The successful candidate will have a tax-free salary of at least 11,400 pounds. Applicants should have at least a 2(i) degree in Computer Science or Life/Physical Sciences with programming skills. A good background in Artificial Intelligence or Statistics would be an advantage. Please submit a CV as soon as possible, but not later than 15 October 1999, to Dr X Liu, Department of Computer Science, Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HX, UK. Phone Dr Liu on 0171-631 6711 or email him ([log in to unmask]) or Dr Orengo ([log in to unmask]).
