400 YEARS OF CHARITY
A conference on the history of voluntary action
University of Liverpool 11-13 September 2001

Outline proposals are invited for papers on the history of
charity and voluntary action for a conference to be held at
the University of Liverpool on 11 - 13 September 2001.

The conference is being jointly organised by the Voluntary
Action History Society, the School of History at the
University of Liverpool and the Centre for Voluntary
Organisation at the LSE. It is being timed to coincide with
the 400th anniversary of the Elizabethan Statute of 1601
which laid the foundations for the modern framework of
charity and the 2001 United Nations International Year of
the Volunteer.

Whilst proposals on any aspect of the history of voluntary
action will be considered, we particularly welcome
contributions on the following themes:

* relations between charities and the State
* case studies of individual charities and voluntary
organisations
* the lives of individual philanthropists and voluntary
sector activists
* trends in volunteering, voluntary action and giving
* mutual aid and self-help
* international comparative research

The conference is open to both academics and practitioners
from the UK and overseas

Conference fee to be confirmed, but will be in the region
of £150 residential and £100 non-residential

Outline proposals of no more than one page should be sent
